Things to Do in Key West in 3 Days

things to do in key west in 3 days
Southernmost point of the U.S.

Key West is a little gem that is often overlooked when visiting Florida. Heck, I’m from Florida and I had never visited until recently! So, I think traveling to the southernmost point of the continental United States over a long weekend is a perfect side trip while visiting central or southern Florida (If you’re traveling from central Florida, skip “Day Two” on the itinerary and you can easily do this trip on a weekend). Just don’t forget to check the weather before you make your plans. Storm systems blow in and out of the area frequently, especially in the summer months during hurricane season. Learn from my mistakes!

Also, I have to mention that to get the max out of your trip with my free 3-day itinerary (or 2-Day optional), make sure to thoroughly read all the information contained herein to ensure this travel plan is a good fit for you.

Overview

The day-by-day agenda outlined below is recommended to you from my own personal experience visiting Key West over a long weekend, except for the visit to Dry Tortugas National Park which I wish I had planned to do the first time around! So, I’ve adjusted the agenda slightly to avoid any disappointments or snags that I experienced. Therefore, your visit should be even smoother than mine!

So, whether you like to relax and take it easy or get out and explore as much as possible, this itinerary can be useful. Surprisingly, there is a lot to do on Key West for such a small island. It’s only 1 mile wide and 4 miles long! However you prefer to spend your downtime, pick and choose a few attractions, or do them all. You set the pace.

  • Take a photo op at the southernmost point of the continental United States.
  • Grab lunch at Ana’s Cuban Cafe down the street.
  • Spend the afternoon exploring and browsing at Mallory Square.

  • Spend the morning exploring Zachary Taylor Historic National Park.
  • Have a picnic lunch on the beach.
  • Stay and enjoy the beach, or go back to your hotel and relax.

Acccomodations and Beaches

I recommend staying at The Reach, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. It’s the only hotel property on the island that has natural beach front access and the service is amazing! Hilton owns the Waldorf Astoria brand, so if you are a member of the Hilton Honors Rewards Program you can use points towards your stay. If not or if this is not in your budget, you can still get your relaxing time at one of the local beaches on Key West:

  • Smathers Beach
  • Higgins Beach
  • Ft. Zachary Taylor Historical State Beach Park

Important!

Booking in advance is required to visit Dry Tortugas National Park. Also, book dinner reservations in advance to avoid long waiting periods. Visit the related links for additional information about these attractions, including: parking, fees, and reservation information.
